Sir Elton John has suffered a “potentially fatal” bacterial infection during his tour of South America, forcing him to spend two nights in an intensive care unit and cancel concerts in Bakersfield, California and Las Vegas, Nevada.
The British singer became extremely ill at the end of a tour of South America in Chile last week, forcing him to return to Britain for urgent medical treatment. Nine US concerts have been cancelled.
Elton, aged 70, is now at home in the UK resting. His management said bacterial infections of the type suffered by Elton were “rare and potentially deadly”. No other details were given.
Elton’s condition deteriorated during a flight back to London from Santiago, Chile, when he became violently ill. He was admitted to intensive care in a hospital as soon as he arrived back in the UK.
He then spent two days in hospital before being allowed to return home on Saturday, 22 April.
